Spelling Bee Champion
On February 11, the final round of the YSWPCS Spelling Bee occurred between the top two spellers in the school – 4th grader Hayden Frederick and 7th grader Riley Morgan. Both students worked very hard to prepare, and performed exceptionally well! In the end, Hayden emerged victorious as the youngest ever Spelling Bee winner at YSWPCS! Congratulations Hayden! As the school’s winner, Hayden went on to compete in the Regional Spelling Bee at Robert Morris University on March 9th. Again, Hayden was one of the youngest students to compete, but he didn’t let that stop him! He did a great job in the bee, and we are so proud of him!

Planetarium Visit
On Tuesday, March 5, members of the Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh brought their mobile planetarium to Young Scholars! Each class got to spend time in the planetarium, looking at the stars not only above Pittsburgh but also above Stonehenge in England! This was a very fun experience for our scholars!
Read Across America Day
Today Young Scholars celebrated Read Across America Day! Students were encouraged to come dressed as their favorite Dr. Seuss characters. K-3 students paired up with 4th-8th graders to read books and make crafts together either in the gym or cafeteria. They also spent time in their classrooms listening to Dr. Seuss books read aloud, watching Dr. Seuss movies and completing Dr. Seuss themed activities.
TigerBot – FTC Journey…
YSWPCS Robotics team “TigerBot” attended the Southwestern Qualifiers to the State Championship at the USC High School on Feb 24th. The TigerBot advanced to the semifinals and ranked 7th place out of 24 teams although the TigerBot team just started the FTC journey three months ago. FIRST Tech Challenge( FTC) teams (up to 15 team members, grades 7-12) are challenged to design, build, program, and operate robots to compete in a head-to-head challenge in an alliance format. Guided by adult coaches and mentors, students develop STEM skills and practice engineering principles while realizing the value of hard work, innovation, and working as a team. Congratulations to the students in the team. We thank everyone else including coaches, volunteers, parents, and principal for their continuous support.
