TigerBot – FTC Journey…

YSWPCS Robotics team “TigerBot” attended the Southwestern Qualifiers to the State Championship at the USC High School on Feb 24th. The TigerBot advanced to the semifinals and ranked 7th place out of 24 teams although the TigerBot team just started the FTC journey three months ago. FIRST Tech Challenge( FTC) teams (up to 15 team members, grades 7-12) are challenged to design, build, program, and operate robots to compete in a head-to-head challenge in an alliance format. Guided by adult coaches and mentors, students develop STEM skills and practice engineering principles while realizing the value of hard work, innovation, and working as a team. Congratulations to the students in the team. We thank everyone else including coaches, volunteers, parents, and principal for their continuous support.

Black History Month Celebrations

Our 3rd Annual Black History Awards took place on Friday, February 15th. This event was not only set up to teach our students a little bit about important African-Americans but also to give them an experience! Numerous students honored famous and influential African-Americans whom they found inspiring. Just like a traditional award show, students presented and were given “awards” as well as performed through speeches, poetry, songs, and dances. Audience members participated in trivia, and students nominated members of our greater Pittsburgh community to receive special recognition of the outstanding work they do every day! Although this celebration takes place during Black History Month, we think it is important that our students understand that learning about Black History can, and should, be done all year long.

Re-enrollment 2019-20 School Year

Please complete the online re-enrollment form for your child(ren) at https:// yswpcs.schoolmint.net/signup . It is our policy that current scholars will keep their seats in the school until they graduate, provided they submit a re-enrollment form by March 1, 2019. The re-enrollment period starts on Jan 1, 2019 and ends on March 1, 2019.

Failure to submit a re-enrollment form by the deadline (March 1st) will result in the student losing his/her guaranteed spot for 2019-20 School Year. If the re-enrollment form is submitted after March 1st, the student will be entered into the open enrollment pool of applicants for lottery, a random selection method, or enrollment on a first-come, first- served basis. For more information on student enrollment procedures, please visit our website at https://yswpcs.org/admission-procedures/ .

If you have any siblings that will be attending YSWPCS in the fall, please complete an online application for this child, making sure to click on SIBLING PREFERENCE. Siblings of current students will have a preference to available seats for the following school year.

Being able to anticipate numbers of new and returning students in each grade allows us to make preliminary plans with respect to space and staffing requirements for the coming year. Please let us know if you don’t have internet connectivity and contact the school if you have any questions at 412-668-2064 or info@yswpcs.org.

Barnes & Noble Day

On Saturday, November 17th Young Scholars held their annual Barnes and Noble book fair at the South Hills Village store. Teachers, students, and families came together to celebrate a love of reading and Harry Potter!! We had musical performances by Mr. McClintock and cheerleading performances by the YSWPCS cheerleaders. Families were also able to make various crafts at our craft stations, go on a scavenger hunt around the store and get an early start on their holiday shopping. Proceeds from this years event will go to students in the school to promote a continued love of reading.

1st Trimester Award Ceremony

On November 21st, students in grades K-8, along with their families, gathered in the MPR to celebrate the great academic success of the first trimester. Families and students were greeted with breakfast, music, and great company. Students were then honored with many awards for their hard work and effort during the first few months of school. Awards given ranged from High Honor Roll to our Top Role Model scholar. This is a special ceremony that we at YSWPCS look forward to at the end of each trimester.
